How to e-file 1099s
It’s expected that you file 1099 tax forms with the IRS and provide a copy to your contractor by January 31 each year. Gig Wage makes it simple and easy to e-file your 1099s with the IRS and share a copy with your contractor.
We automatically create drafts of 1099s for contractors that have payments made from Gig Wage.
While logged into your Gig Wage account, from your Settings under Business, you can set your tax address and choose how you would like your contractors to receive their 1099's (digital vs paper). Remember to click Save once completed.
This is the process you can go through to e-file your 1099s.
There are 4 steps to submitting a 1099:
-
Navigate to 1099s in Gig Wage
-
Review draft 1099s
-
Mark drafts as ready
-
Submit to the IRS
Step 1: Navigate to the 1099 section of Gig Wage in the sidebar
From here, you'll see all 1099s created and submitted for the current tax filing year.
Step 2: Review draft 1099s
You can filter by status (e.g. Draft, Needs Review, Ready to Submit, or Submitted) then select "Drafts" to view all draft 1099s that need review.
If you need to make changes, click the edit icon.
Check the contractor information, and add any additional information like outside payments, or tax withholdings. When you're done, click "save".
Step 3: Mark drafts as ready
Once you've reviewed your drafts, select the drafts you'd like to mark as ready. You can select each one individually, or click the select all box at the top of the table to bulk select.
Once you've selected your drafts, click mark as ready in the top right and confirm you're ready for your drafts to be marked as ready.
After you've marked your drafts as ready, the status of your draft will change to validating. The validating status is where we make sure your draft is complete and there are no errors that need to be resolved.
If the draft is complete, the status will automatically change to "Ready to Submit." If the draft is not complete, the status will automatically change to "Needs review," where you'll need to review the errors and repeat the mark as ready process.
You can filter the table to view all 1099s in different statuses at any time.
Once your draft 1099 is in the "Ready to Submit" state, you're ready to officially e-file with the IRS.
Step 4: Submit to the IRS
Select the forms that are in "Ready to Submit" status and click "Submit to IRS." This will officially e-file with the IRS and cannot be undone.
Confirm that you are submitting the selected 1099s to the IRS.
Once you've submitted a 1099 to the IRS, the status of your 1099 form will change to "submitting", which means we are in the process of submitting your 1099.
Once it has been submitted, a pdf icon will display next to your 1099 form where you can download the 1099.
Once you click download, the 1099 will open in a new tab.
